I've always had a crush on those old school glitter ceilings. You know the ones with the popcorn ceiling that had flakes of gold or silver glitter? Well of course I just had to have some kind of glitter bling going on in the camper, but how to do it?
There was this pin all over Pinterest about just dumping a jar of glitter in paint to make a glitter wall. After much research that pin was deemed bogus. Dumping a jar of glitter in paint would just coat the glitter. Then I discovered Valspar paint crystals. These paint crystals are used to make the glitter effect when painting faux granite. You can buy them in gold or silver.
Since I was painting the ceiling of a tiny camper, I only needed a quart of paint. I used Behr teal ice. I happily dumped two bags of paint crystals into my paint can (I wanted it to be real glittery) but soon realized there wasn't enough room to stir it up! So I had to dump the paint into the pan and stir it up that way.
I really like how the glitter ceiling turned out. It's subtle and it sparkles when the light hits it. I still need to buy and install the air conditioner and I'm currently finishing out all the white trim work. I'm also ready to put the window screens back up. Then it will be time for the floor.
What color paint did you use?
ReplyDeleteHi Ashleigh! The color is Behr - teal ice :)
ReplyDeleteDo the Valspar Crystals work in different brand paints? (The customer service representative did not know. He implied the crystals chemically react to Valspar only....sounds like he was trying to sell me some Valspar paint.)
ReplyDeleteYep, they work in other paint. I actually used them with Behr paint. :)
ReplyDeletesoooo pretty! we're about to repaint daughter's bedroom and I was searching for ideas ... needless to say, she started squealing with delight when I showed her this :)
ReplyDeletesmall bathrooms with no windows would be delightful, especially if you leave a nightlight on [in a socket]
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic idea!!
ReplyDeleteThis would be a REALLY COOL affect to add to one of our Paint-by-Number wall murals! I will definitely share this with our followers/customers/whoever!
We did have one customer who simply added glitter to the paint when she was painting some of our fairy wings, but it's nice to know that the Valspar Crystals are smooth.
Thanks for sharing! In the meantime, you might want to check out our website!

ReplyDeleteHi Patti! Oh definitely it would work great with your paint-by-numbers. What a very cool product btw! Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteOld house, old school. how was the glitter put onto the popcorn ceilings? was it sprayed on, what kind of sprayer ?
ReplyDeleteThis is so awesome! It is a really cool effect. Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteYour very welcome! It really is fun and super easy!
ReplyDeleteSo so pleased I saw this as I almost bought wall paper and it's so expensive. Do you think I could use any paint?
ReplyDeleteHi Claire! Yes, you can use any brand interior paint. I bought the Valspar crystals from Lowe's but used them in Behr paint from Home Depot.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. Did you use a roller? Do you think I could add extra crystals to get a really dramatic effect? Also I'm in uk so need to see if I can get it here
ReplyDeleteYep, I used a roller and I added two packets of crystals I am sure you can add more if you want. Hopefully you can find them in the UK :)
ReplyDeleteWow, that's gorgeous! I'm soon to be painting over a BRIGHT purple room that was my daughters. We're swapping her bedroom and my office to give the kids more space. I'm thinking of doing 3 creamy-beige walls and a GOLD accent wall - how perfect would gold glitter be on a gold accent wall? I must find this glitter and buy it!
ReplyDeletehow long will the paint last? I have 2 walls to cover and only have time to do one at a time. Will it last till the next day or should I just set a day aside and do nothing but painting those walls together? Going to do a coral orange with the crystals :)
ReplyDeleteHi Kristen! I am not sure how long it will last once you mix it into the paint. I did it all in one setting. For some reason I recall trying to search for that very same answer and decided to do it all at once. :) Also, I apologize for the delayed reply!
ReplyDeleteHi from the UK. I found your blog and thought you might like to know that you can buy the GOLD Valspar crystals on ebay in the UK.
ReplyDeleteThey are wonderfull !!!
Thanks so much for sharing Lyn! I am sure our friends in the UK will be happy to hear that :)
ReplyDeleteHello. I have recently bought these and plan to do a dark blue ceiling with the silver glitter, however it will need 2 coats of paint. Did you have to do 2 coats? Do you think it would be best to paint the first coat without the crystals and then the final coat with? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes you could totally use the crystals in the final coat :) Either way would work I think. Have fun!
