I thought the cushions that came with our camper were great but since we made the bed bigger, we needed new cushions. We are pretty sure that the cushions were not original as the foam was just in too good of condition. 50 year old foam would have been all well... old, stinky, stained and/or grainy. They must have been made by some previous owners before my cousin bought the camper.
Since our cushions make the bed I just had to add a layer of memory foam on top of each cushion. I ended up buying two memory foam mattress toppers in queen size (1.5" thick) and cut them up for the cushions. I also just used the foam from the original cushions (and added foam where needed.)
We closed up the backs of the cushions with velcro so that the covers could be removable and washable.
Just another one of my projects - this one is still a work in progress! My dad took the original chandelier and painted it white for me. Ok, I should say that I painted it white and made a huge mess of it. Then my dad exclaimed "didn't anyone teach you how to shoot paint?" and proceeded to sand blast it and repaint it. It looks great now. I have since been stringing different beads to hang on it. It's going to be filled with beads of all colors.

i am working on renovating a very similar camper right now & i'm obsessed with your blog at the moment! mine is a '68 red dale, and has the same color vintage appliances as yours, so i've been especially interested to see all the picks of your color choices. i LOVE the turquoise & yellow chevron pillows on the gray/white cushions.

Hi Brandy, it's barb, the one with the other Williamscraft, near Tyler. Sad to say my re-do is on hold, but I LOVE what you did with the chandelier. Did you add any more beads? I would like to se a pic if you did. I was trying to decide what to do with mine and this is inspiration for sure! So sorry about your fibro. I recently had a wreck and you are right about the pain. I think I will try some of your recipes.

ReplyDeleteI picked up the striped fabric at Gibson's - a local store in town. I had a hard time finding something I liked and was surprised to find it there. They usually have western prints more than anything else. ;) Best of luck on your renovation! xo B
I am trying to cover new foam for my 1975 Airstream where I built a new dinette where the couch used to be. I am going back and forth between stapling fabric to a backboard actually sewing covers. How did you sew yours? Is it just two pieces (top and bottom) and filled in with the foam or did you sew side sections into the design as well?
ReplyDeleteHi Collin! Our cushions have a top and bottom with side panels. We've never done an upholstery project like this (and I don't sew) but my mom did a pretty awesome job considering. We had to do a bit of google research to see how to sew the corners properly - and they aren't perfect but they are in the back so you can't see the mistakes. That was the hardest part for her. Other options: you could make them like big flat pillows but it wouldn't have as much support. And yep, you could use a backboard and staple the fabric and batting over the foam. Do a search for DIY bench seat cushions and you should get plenty of ideas. Especially through Pinterest. Hope this helps and good luck!
